Walk into any pet shop and you’ll find dozens of shampoos lining the shelves. The good news: most pets do well with a gentle, hypoallergenic formula. The trickier part is reading the label.
Ingredients to look for
- Oat & aloe vera: Soothing for itchy or sensitive skin.
- Jojoba & shea butter: Natural moisturizers that don’t strip the coat.
- Chlorhexidine: Mild antimicrobial useful for skin-prone breeds.
Ingredients to avoid
- Sulfates (SLS, SLES) — too harsh for daily use.
- Artificial fragrance — common irritant; opt for fragrance-free or essential-oil-based.
- Parabens — linked to skin sensitivity in long-term use.
The pH question
Human skin is slightly acidic; pet skin is more neutral. Never use human shampoo on pets, even baby shampoo, as the wrong pH disrupts the skin barrier.
