Bad breath in pets isn’t normal — it’s usually the first sign of plaque buildup. Left unchecked, dental disease can lead to painful infections and even heart problems.
Start young if you can
Puppies and kittens accept brushing or finger wipes much more easily than adults. Even older pets can learn — go slow, pair sessions with treats, and stop when your pet says enough.
The simplest routine
- Wipe outer surfaces of the teeth with a finger wipe or soft brush — once a day if possible.
- Use pet-specific toothpaste only. Never human paste — fluoride is toxic to pets.
- Schedule a professional cleaning every 12-18 months as a baseline.
Watch for these signs
Yellow-brown buildup, swollen gums, dropped food, or sudden reluctance to eat hard kibble all signal a vet visit. Early treatment is fast and cheap; advanced disease often means extractions and weeks of recovery.
